NRDAR Practice Exchange

Key Activities and Meetings

This page provides information on key meetings and activities, as well as related documentation, that will be of interest to practitioners working on natural resource damage assessment (NRDA) and restoration issues.

Meetings

This website tracks key meetings and conferences directly and indirectly related to natural resource damage assessment and restoration issues. A listing of such meetings in the current year can be found here. Contact us at info@NRDonline.com if you know of additional relevant meetings. Information on specific meetings, 1988 to present, can be provided upon request.

Activities

The activities listed below represent some of the ongoing NRDA-related projects undertaken jointly by government and industry.

Cooperative NRDA Guiding Principles and Sample Provisions

A compendium of NRDA agreements has been prepared in order to provide background information for government and private parties alike in approaching possible cooperative assessments. The document, “Cooperative Natural Resource Damage Assessment Agreement Guiding Principles and Sample Provisions” contains sample provisions and principles which are intended to serve as a tool for parties undertaking a cooperative NRDA and can be tailored for site-specific purposes. Phase 2 of this activity was completed in September 2011. See Cooperative NRDA Guiding Principles and Sample Provisions -- Phase 2.

Regional Joint Assessment Teams

In 1995, natural resource trustees and industrial companies established the West Coast Joint Assessment Team (JAT) to provide a regional forum for dialogue among practitioners involved in the NRDA process. Since then, other JATs were established, including in the Great Lakes Region, the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast. Periodic meetings, conference calls and webinars have been held. The West Coast JAT has met in 2011 and additional information on the other JATs will be posted here upon availability. For more information on the JATs, contact us at info@NRDonline.com.

Industry/Trustee Standing Committee

In 1999, the Ad-Hoc Industry Natural Resource Damage Group established a standing committee to provide a mechanism for easy communication and information exchange between government and industry on natural resource damage practice and related issues. The Committee meets 2-3 times a year and is comprised of industrial company representatives and, on an invited basis, representatives from several key industry trade associations. All five federal trustee departments and agencies, state government representatives, the US Environmental Protection Agency and representatives from the tribal community are invited to participate in meetings. In addition to providing NRD activity updates, joint projects of mutual interest and benefit to the broad stakeholder community are identified and undertaken. Global Restoration Network Database

The US Department of Interior has set up a liaison with the Society of Ecological Restoration (SER) Global Restoration Network Online Database in order to provide a focal point for information concerning ecological restoration, including case studies, experts, organizations and literature. NRDAR practitioners are encouraged to submit “Fact Sheets” on sites involving completed restoration projects. To submit a Fact Sheet or for more information, see the Database website or contact us at contact us at info@NRDonline.com .
